One of the most celebrated show horses of the 20th century. In 1948, the chestnut Saddlebred Stallion, Wing Commander won his first Five-Gaited World Grand Championship, a title he defended for five years. In total he won 6 Five-Gaited World Grand Championships, the first of only two horses to accomplish this feat. In 1950 Life magazine featured Wing Commander as an example of a fine athlete and an American phenomenon. Owned by Dodge Stables and trained and ridden by Earl Teater. Wing Commander stood at stud at Castleton Farms in Lexington Kentucky. He became one of the greatest influences on the modern American Saddlebred. He passed away at the age of 29. This print is from an original oil painting by Helen Hayse after the famous George Ford Morris photograph. Available as an open edition print or limited edition signed and numbered by the late artist, Helen Hayse. 25" x 21", unframed.
