The Mint Julep - the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby. Reference to this refreshing beverage dates back to the 18th century. It became the favorite of the South in the 19th century, when crushed ice became more available. This mix comes from the original Williamsburg recipe which contains a blend sugar, mint and herb leaves. It makes a simple syrup that many Mint Julep enthusiast agree to be just the right combination of sugar and herbs. When added to crushed ice and bourbon, it makes a delicious drink that has been enjoyed over centuries.
Directions: Empty the package of mix into a small pan, add 1 cup water, cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, remove from heat and let stand, covered until cool. Strain into ajar, cover tightly and keep refrigerated.
Yields mixture for 18 servings.
Fill cup with crushed ice and place in the freezer to frost until ready to use. Add 1-2 ounces of bourbon and 1 tablespoon of the Mint Julep Syrup. (shake before using) Stir, garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and serve!
