Snaffles (Charles Johnson Payne) British 1884-1967 is considered by many as one of the greatest sporting and military artist of his time. This is a delightful hunting scene by Snaffles, who hunted keenly from an early age and his understanding of field sports, combined with his sharp wit, gave his work an endearing and authentic quality which has ensured that it remains prized by collectors to this day.

His famous subject The Huntsman, often subtitled "The 'Oss Loves the 'Ounds but I Loves Both", was first published in around 1923 and depicts the huntsman counting his pack around him. By the early 1920s, Snaffles's rise to celebrity was rapidly accelerating. He had endured significant financial hardships in the years preceding the First World War but, during the war itself, his contributions to various magazines, as well as the increasing popularity of his prints, had assured him of a comfortable existence.
