          Derby Tips for Novices

          Tips for Kentucky Derby Novices

We thought you might appreciate some advice from local Louisvillians!

          •  Dress for any weather. The first week in May is one of the most unpredictable weeks in Kentucky. Be prepared for 40F to 90F. If it is hot and sunny, you will be glad you remembered your hat. After a few mint juleps, the sun can do a number on you. Actually, a few mint juleps can do a number in any weather! And p.s. ~ even when rain is expected, do not bring an umbrella to the track – that's a big no-no. It will be confiscated at the gate and that probably will be the last time you ever see it.

          •  For the size it is, Louisville has an incredible number of restaurants and there are some very good ones. It seems that the favorite pastime—after horse racing—is eating out. But over Derby weekend, unless you have reservations, you're going to have a long wait for dinner. Of course, who's in a rush? A unique city law allows bars to stay open all night on Derby Eve. So you will have plenty of time to enjoy the evening, even after a late, late dinner.

          •  The very best way to get to Churchill Downs on Derby Day is the bus. Louisville has a great system, with special, reserved routes for its buses, and it is relatively cheap. We've seen the first happy Derby patrons arriving back at their downtown hotels half an hour after the last race! Buses stop throughout the city, and it's fun to ride with the upbeat derby goers.

          •  If you are over the age of 25, the infield might not be the best place for you. Then again, you might enjoy living on the edge! Expect anything .

          •  Louisville does not have a large pool of taxicabs. So if you want to use one during this period of high demand, be prepared not to arrive on time. Allow for plenty of time, and remember—it would probably be easier (and more fun) to make some new friends and hitch a ride.

          •  If you attend the Kentucky Derby, then you will most likely want to bet on the race. Bet early! Otherwise, you will be closed out. Most of the local liquor stores start selling the Daily Racing Form and the track programs on Friday night, but be warned that they sell out fast.

Most importantly, have a great time, meet new friends and place a few bets!
