Internationally acclaimed artist LeRoy Neiman has created a dynamic image to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Secretariat winning the 99th Kentucky Derby. In conjunction with Woodford Reserve Bourbon, the new image is the centerpiece for the 2008 limited edition collectible bottle and 24 karat julep cup produced by the respected Kentucky distillery. Neiman's vibrant portrayal captures the speed, beauty and grace of Secretariat and jockey Ron Turcotte as they near the finish line beneath the legendary Twin Spires of Churchill Downs. The image manifests Neiman's distinctive style, characterized by splashes of brilliant color coupled with a a dream-like impressionistic touch. Like all Neiman artwork, it conveys a sense of movement from the subject while capturing the drama of the event. And what an event it was... the May 5, 1973 Kentucky Derby remains the benchmark of excellence for the first jewel in the Triple Crown. Secretariat's brilliant final time of 1:59 2/5 for the mile and a quarter distance established a new track record that still stands today.
